Dream Dairy Farm Restaurant

Bringing the Forest to the Table

The Dream Dairy Farm Restaurant, designed by Moriyuki Ochiai Architects, seamlessly blends nature and contemporary design to create a unique dining experience.

The Dream Dairy Farm Restaurant is located on a farm surrounded by a lush forest, and its menu features dairy products made from fresh milk produced on-site. The challenge for the design team was to showcase the menu attractively while also highlighting the charm of the existing wooden cabin that has been a part of the farm since its inception.

The standout feature of the restaurant is the three-dimensional white lattice that forms a canopy above the beams of the wooden structure. This lattice creates the illusion of a forest, bridging the old and the contemporary and suggesting the superimposition of time and space. The ceiling, composed of a volume peering through a larger wooden frame, is fitted with glossy translucent resin boards that provide subdued lighting throughout the space.

The layered structure of the lattice and resin boards creates a constantly evolving play of light. As the light reflects off and penetrates the resin boards, it produces intricate and dynamic expressions. The resulting shower of light can be experienced differently depending on the diner's position and line of sight, adding to the immersive atmosphere.

To enhance the warm and intimate atmosphere, the walls of the restaurant are painted with a special paint that echoes the texture of plain soil found on the farm. This, combined with the natural warmth of timber, creates a cozy ambiance. Pendant lighting hanging at regular intervals resembles drops of milk dripping from the canopy, adding a touch of whimsy to the space.

The design also incorporates elements that evoke the energy of a living forest. The rough grain motif of the counter represents a thundering waterfall, while the columns are accented with wooden details created by a special paint. These elements bring a sense of vitality and connection to nature.

The Dream Dairy Farm Restaurant covers an area of 96 square meters and was completed in August 2014. It is located in Chiba, Tokyo. The design project began in January 2014 and was realized by Moriyuki Ochiai Architects. The design has received accolades, including the Silver A' Design Award in 2016, which recognizes outstanding expertise, innovation, and excellence in interior space, retail, and exhibition design.

The Dream Dairy Farm Restaurant is a testament to the power of design to create a unique and immersive dining experience. By seamlessly integrating nature, light, and contemporary elements, Moriyuki Ochiai Architects has transformed a simple wooden cabin into a magical forest where patrons can enjoy a meal made with fresh dairy products.
